Home Office Chess Club Simultaneous
29 June 2006

Tim Pelling gave a Simultaneous Display on Thursday 29 June. This was the first organised event in the club's summer programme. Apart from Tim, only four people were able to take part (Peter Biggs, Keith Dunmore, David Lacey, Duncan Lavin). It was a shame that there weren't more people as it seems to have been an exciting and enjoyable event. Tim's report is below.

"A good evening in the end, although only the four original entrants turned up for it. It was a clock simul: rather than mess about with added time (Fischer) or free time (Bronstein) we settled for 75 minutes thinking time each with 30 secs a move thereafter (byo-yomi setting no 28). This seemed to work although we never got that far (Keith got within 12 sec of the byo-yomi start).

"As there were only four participants, I thought that we should draw lots for colours, which resulted in my only white being against David L. So he got the chance of practising his new French Defence. Duncan's game became a long business of trying to win a fixed pawn formation ending (Stonewall v Stonewall) with me having the better bishop. The game with Keith was a most interesting manoeuvring affair by both of us, which only clearly went my way near the end.

"A Queen's Gambit Accepted against Peter B resulted in wild complications and if I thought I would out-calculate Peter, I was sadly mistaken. Soon I was a rook and two pawns down for nothing. Even though for a while "nothing" did become "something", the rook proved too much in the end and Peter was delighted at chalking up his first win against me. It was the first to finish and gave me the breathing space to concentrate on winning the other three."
