Ashby, A. - Tello, Y.
Surrey League

[B20]

1.e4 c5 2.a3 A weird way to avoid the main line Sicilian.
2...e6 3.b4 cxb4 4.d4 d5 5.e5 The game has transposed to the infamous Siberian Forest variation of the French Defence. Tony is very much at home in these positions.
5...Nc6 6.axb4 Bxb4+ 7.c3 Bf8 8.Bd3 g6 A novelty - and not a good one. Black is taking too long over his development. Instead ...Bd7 or ...Nge7 were better.
9.Nf3 f6 10.h4 Black's kingside looks distinctly vulnerable so Tony goes for the direct approach.
10...fxe5 11.dxe5 Bg7 12.h5 Nge7 13.hxg6 Nxg6?
[A mistake which loses a pawn. He clearly hadn't seen Tony's next move. Correct was
13...hxg6 14.Rxh8+ Bxh8 15.Bf4]
14.Rxh7! Ncxe5
[Not 14...Rxh7 15.Bxg6+ Kd7 16.Bxh7 when White is a piece up.]
15.Rxh8+
[Better was
15.Nxe5! Nxe5 16.Qh5+ Nf7 17.Rxh8+ Bxh8 18.Bg6 winning a piece.]
15...Bxh8 16.Nxe5 Nxe5 17.Qh5+ Kd7 18.Bb5+ Nc6?
[This loses. Black is still in the game after
18...Kc7 19.Bf4 Qf6]
19.Qh7+ Kd6 20.Ba3+ Ke5 21.Bxc6
[21.Bd3 is forcing to mate, e.g.
21...Bd7 22.Qh5+ Kf6 23.Qh6+ Ke5 24.f4# That's computers for you! Always wanting to get it over with quickly!]
21...bxc6 22.Qh5+ Ke4
[22...Kf6 Prolongs the game but loses the queen to
23.Qh4+]
23.Nd2+ Kd3 24.Qf3+ Kc2 25.Rc1# A fine 19th century finish by Tony.
